Description by +Tongtong

Multidisciplinary design studio +tongtong recently completed a renovation and addition to a traditional Victorian house in Toronto. The house was transformed into an open and bright modern home through a series of strategic moves and incisions.

The specifications were to build a modern family home that expands the area of livable space while remaining true to the vernacular of the neighborhood. This challenge was met with an emphasis on natural materials and light. Inspired by rural living and the original build date of the home, industrial materials accentuate re-imagined architectural qualities in an unmistakable contemporary space.

Grey and black zinc used throughout both the exterior and interior of the home is a material that blends traditional aspects with the new contemporary scheme. Inside, a vertical shaft brings light from large skylights down 3 floors illuminating the ground floor while animating a zinc wall and ceiling above the kitchen.

As for +tongtong principal John Tong’s favourite element of the house, “I really embrace the slot between the two floors. It turns the 2nd floor hallway into a bridge that connects all of the floors. This is key to bringing light down to the first floor.”

On the 3rd floor, the entire gable has been replaced with an expansive triangular glass window affording views of the neighbourhood and downtown skyline in the distance. A custom-made triangular blind shades the window and retracts into a millwork unit when not in use.

In the kitchen, an original window at the side of the house was reconfigured proportionally to retain its original breadth. This now horizontal window extends along the kitchen and integrates seamlessly within the millwork of the dining room. The kitchen counter also extends providing the means for a countertop vent-free ethanol fireplace in the dining room. Throughout the home, millwork such as that found in the transitional space between the kitchen and dining room defines overlapping function.

Outside, the rear facade of the home has been entirely transformed to maximize views of the expansive elm tree behind the house; while in front, a large glass pop-out opens up the home to the street while being protected from the sun and elements by a new zinc awning reminiscent of bygone neighbourhood corner stores. The landscaped berm and retaining walls create a layer of privacy between the public street and the private home which provides a small area of refuge in front of the home for children to play, complete with theatre seating to watch the spectacle of life unfold.

Description by FCP Arquitectura

A large volume of white extended walls that recreates the trees on the lot preserving family privacy that connects with portions of forest … lots of heaven … lots of water.

The lot is located in a gated neighborhood near the central area of the city of Córdoba and it showed great contrasts … .an irregular exposing corner lot that challenged us to preserve home life … .an ancient dense forest of native trees occupied half of the land, opposite to a plain stripped of vegetation.

The challenge and exploration of the work aimed to amalgamate the light of the land with the programmatic needs of housing … the forest, its shadow, its intimacy … and the plain, its light, its expansion as a vacuum to overturn in architecture. A serene family life of four members with an active social life. Thus, the skin is the element that condenses this dialectic as a contact membrane between the inside and the outside, assuming the responsibility to face different requirements as a whole.
We decided to consider the work in a stereotomic way, thereby we established and reinforced a concrete boundary between public and private. Pure white ceramic block masonry volumes lightly suspended soil barely were thought to connect the inner and outer spaces according to the demands of interior activities. As subtle counterpoint to the white walls, rusty sheets of iron act as a filter in these turning points, mobile panels that regulate access, lighting, privacy, from the full opacity to the transparency of the perforated surfaces.
The green landscape and the folds of the topography that we had built complete the proposal to set up a private space that reviews the patio paradigm. The requirement of considering the water as part of the family activities throughout the year brought about a large water mirror that connects the social spaces of the house and extends to the barbecue. In summer it enjoys the outdoors in the sun meanwhile the house offers shelter in winter with the help of solar and heating systems.
The culmination of the work relied on local construction systems and reinforced concrete masonry. The strategy aimed to differentiate private to social places, a smaller spatial scale and the presence of the walls capture visuals; and a more permeable social space characterized by large beams that support the roof and the wall of the main façade, hanging over and diluting the limits, large aluminum frames open the space to the family yard.
The proposal optimizes the relationship between the geometry of the lot, its landscape, the programmatic requirements of housing and our spatial intentions. Most private housing sectors directly link with the forest in the zero plane …they have direct contact with the tree and on the terrace. On a larger scale, social spaces are connected to the empty open place… the reference of the tree is at the distance …it is sculptural.

Bedroom Design Ideas

Between sleeping, reading and, quite simply, relaxing, it’s likely you spend a lot of time in your bedroom. It makes sense, then, that you’ve also spent a significant amount of time turning it into your own personal oasis.p1

CONVENTIONAL

p2

A conventional bedroom layout is anchored by a bed with a nightstand on either side. Across from the foot of the bed, a dresser should be situated below a mirror.

Resist the temptation to add more furniture. You don’t need it.

LOUNGE-LIKE

p3

If your room has ample space, however, consider creating a lounge-like atmosphere. For creating a separate space for daytime relaxation in your bedroom, situate two lounge chairs across from the foot of the bed with a side table in between them.

TINY BEDROOM

p4

In tiny bedrooms, it’s important to make us of the side walls and mirrors to open up the space. One space-saving technique is to put the bed against the wall, with a single nightstand. Use bright colors to make the space look bigger!

SHARED SPACE

p5

This idea can be used especially for the kids’ room. The goal with a shared space should be to create separate “zones” so your children — or whoever else is sharing the bedroom — can feel as though they have an area of their own.

2.Farm House Style;

A farm house wouldn't be complete without plants, and rustic details. Add a rustic carpet on your floor or rustic
sheets on your bed. If you are not a fan of real flowers because you don't have time to take care of it you can buy
some faux ones and it will look as beautiful as they were real.

3 Spring Trends

3 Spring Trends

If you haven’t already thought about redecorating something in your house with the arrival of spring, well now is the time!

If you wonder what should you change I suggest to find places in your house which are in need of a little bit of life.

The first trend I’d like to speak about is the Color White. I know, I know white isn’t really a color, but this spring you need to bring light in your house and decorating in white (and add a pop of color) is the main thing to do for a brighter home.

The second trend speaks about imposing colors as green, baby blue, yellow on velvet couches and on little accessories like flower vases, a green plant, a blanket or candle jars.

The last, but not the least trend speaks about decorating with a mix of patterns. I mean, try to mix something that fits with the idea of decoration in your mind, but try not to overdecorate ( I mean paint walls in patterns and also put a carpet with lots of pattern).

P.S: Geometric patterns are a real trend!

From all three trends, I have to admit that the last one is my favorite, because these days I really have a passion for geometric tattoos, patterns, sheets and so on. Which one is your favorite?
