House Renovation by +Tongtong Architects

Description by +Tongtong Multidisciplinary design studio +tongtong recently completed a renovation and addition to a traditional Victorian house in Toronto. The house was transformed into an open and bright modern home through a series of strategic moves and incisions. The specifications were to build a modern family home that expands the area of livable space while remaining true to the vernacular of the neighborhood. This challenge was met with an emphasis on natural materials and light. Inspired by rural living and the original build date of the home, industrial materials accentuate re-imagined architectural qualities in an unmistakable contemporary space. Grey and black zinc used throughout both the exterior and interior of the home is a material that blends traditional aspects with the new contemporary scheme. Inside, a vertical shaft brings light from large skylights down 3 floors illuminating the ground floor while animating a zinc wall and ceiling above the [ Continue reading ]

Villa Mecklin by Huttunen Lipasti Pakkanen Architects

The place where Villa Mecklin lounges stands for serene atmosphere amidst the tree cluster and its welcoming stone terrace. Created by the Helsinki-based team Risto Huttunen,Santeri Lipasti and Pekka Pakkanen, this home design is perfectly suitable for a summer escape. Mainly self-built, this lodge is situated near the northern cape of Mustaluoto Island, where on its earstern side lays off a splendid boat marina. When coming from the harbour to the entry of the main building, you get surprised by the omnipresence of the trees. After sight-seeing the surroundings, you get to be dazzled by the breathtaking horizon witnessed from the wide terrace, accessed via a hatch in the decking. To have an ever more spectacular outline, a fireplace has been drilled in the centre of the terrace. When the hatch is not in place and the fire is not lit, the generous terrace can also be used as a [ Continue reading ]

Lightbox House by Edwards Moore

The midget single-storey terrace house, dwarfed by the surroundings makes a splash in the encompassing borderlands. Aiming to exploit the modest space, the designer ofthe Lightbox successfully harnessed the scope. To sweeten the atmosphere, wide windows have been introduced in order to let the sunbeam accompany the ambience of the dwelling. The desire to enhance the quality of the living spaces within contributes to increasing the hospitality of the crib. The second floor should only be seen as a horizontal plane within the home, but as a vertical space, having considered the feeling of unity that its existence contributes to creating the impression of spaciousness. The see-through skin boasts the medium with natural light and the strategically installed openings provide an inner landscape. The fully-white painted walls empower the effect of wideness, inducing a flavor of tastefullness and roominess. The minimalistic features and wood inserts construct a breezy ambience and [ Continue reading ]

How to Make a Garden Fountain Out of, Well, Anything You Want

You tried sweating it out in the sauna, you can’t let go in a yoga pose, and om isn’t exactly hitting home. And no wonder—you’re working too hard at relaxing. What you need is a place to sit quietly and contemplate the sounds of nature: birds chirping, breezes blowing, brooks babbling. What—no backyard brook? Not a problem. Just build yourself the next best thing, with a softly trickling garden fountain. The project is nothing to get stressed about. In a mere weekend, you can fountain-ize most any leftover garden ornament, turning it into an enduring monument to tranquillity. Revive a defunct birdbath, declare your own ode to a Grecian urn, or drill holes in a stack of rocks you found on-site, as This Old House technical editor Mark Powers did for a friend one hot afternoon. When the job is finished and your fountain runneth over, you’ll rinse the tension from your [ Continue reading ]

Apartment in Panama by dos G Arquitectos

“The concept for the renovation of spaces was to update the floor plan of a 30 years old apartment in Punta Paitilla (Panama City) with an old distribuition in order to adapt it to the demands of contemporary life, for the current owner that enjoys cooking, wants his privacy, has no need of using air conditioning because prefers cross ventilation, enjoys the “dolce far niente” of sitting and watching a sunset. The most important element was to include the views/sky and the exterior as a part of interior design. We made punctual demolitions in order to achieve this modern layout of open spaces that intercommunicate and relate with the environment and landscape. The apartment is the entire 26th floor of the building, so we were able to re-design the entire lobby, creating a new and more central entry. From this lobby the owner has another service entry to the apartment’s [ Continue reading ]

Modern Home Appearance With a Futuristic Feel

This is a modern two story home that is located in Fitzroy Park in London, United Kingdom. It was designed by Stanton Williams. This home sits in a beautiful garden surrounded by trees, ferns and grass throughout the lawn. It has a sound barrier wall which stretches across the outskirts of the property. These walls provide privacy for the residents which block the view going to the home of the glass walls. This allows the residents of the home to keep their blinds open to let sunshine in throughout the day without sacrificing their privacy. The first thing you will notice when you walk into the home is the planet-styled lighting. There are several lights that hang from the ceiling which are encased inside cylindrical shells. This disperses the light and gives it a futuristic feel. Another interesting feature in this home is the hanging fireplace. The fireplace hangs from [ Continue reading ]
